The goal of the VALE OLS Project is the creation of a single-instance shared library system for all VALE libraries. One of the desired outcomes of such a system would be a shared discovery layer that fully supports the education and research workflows of the users at each participating institution in a manner that is consistent and understandable. The VALE OLS Implementation Team (VOIT) is currently identifying one or more finalist candidates for a shared discovery layer to support discovery and fulfillment of user information needs. In this session they will demo their work thus far.

Session Summary & Links

This session kicked off with a brief overview of VOIT (the VALE OLS Implementation Team) and its main charges -- to select a discovery layer and develop a data migrartion plan for the VALID libraries.

This was followed by demos of 2 open source discovery tools that offer Next Gen features -- VuFind and XC. It was noted that VOIT is keeping their eyes and ears open for news about other possible interfaces. VOIT is also working closely with other VALE committees on various facets of the VALID project.

Chris Sterbak, Rutgers University, demoed VuFind. He setup a demo site with 50K records, approximately 10K records from each VALID alpha library.

Guy Dobson, Drew University, demoed XC.
