Bibliographic Control and Metadata Committee - History About VALE: Virtual Academic Library Environment

Bibliographic Control and Metadata Committee

The VALE Bibliographic Control and Metadata Committee was founded in March 2002. Before that, the Committee was under the name State Academic Library Catalogers Committee of New Jersey (SALCC-NJ) in 2001, and Bibliographic Control Committee, New Jersey Academic Library Network (NJALN) from February of 1996 to 2001. This committee explores common issues faced by the bibliographic control and technical services librarians of the New Jersey state academic libraries. To this end members share information; provide technical and moral support and continuing education; and foster cooperative efforts in resource sharing among member libraries.

The first meeting was held on March 11, 1996 at William Paterson University.  Kathleen Hughes, Head of Cataloging Department of Montclair University was elected chair.  Under her leadership, goals and discussion topics were determined.  The goals were: to share experiences related to online catalogs software; to work as a support group for sharing cataloging and other problems, and to push the online catalog system vendors for better services.  Some of the topics discussed were: workflow; authority control, methods of cleanup, and staff training.  All these topics were discussed in detail to everyone’s satisfaction.

In 1998, Jianrong Wang, Head of Cataloging from the Richard Stockton College of New Jersey, was elected chair, and re-elected in 2000.  In 1999, the Committee explored the possibility of joining NACO and decided that the Committee was not ready yet.  Desire for authority control training was expressed.  Jianrong arranged a training session with the Library of Congress through the PALINET-OCLC organization.  Ruta Penkiunas, Team Leader, Cooperative Cataloging, and Gracie Gilliam from the Library of Congress successfully conducted the training on October 19-20, 2000, in PALINET’s Philadelphia Headquarters.  Member institutions benefited from the training. At the November meeting of 2000 one of the main topics was cataloging of electronic resources with OCLC’s CORC (Cooperative Online Resource Catalog).  Barbara McWilliams, Library Services Consultant at OCLC and Meryl Cinnamon, OCLC Services Manager at PALINET gave a presentation on CORC on June 7, 2001.

At the meeting in March, 2001, the Committee voted to change its name to the State Academic Library Catalogers Committee of New Jersey (SALCC-NJ).  Soon after, the Committee was incorporated to VALE under the name Bibliographic Control Committee.  Later it was changed to VALE Bibliographic Control and Metadata Committee (VALE BCMC).

In 2002, Amy Job, from William Paterson University was elected chair.  Since joining VALE, the committee has increased its visibility and expanded its activities beyond the original scope.  This website was created with useful information like news, member’s directory, links to other websites of interest to catalogers, and research and reports prepared by members of the committee.  It is maintained by MeiLing Chow, of Montclair State University.  The committee also has a listserv housed and maintained by William Paterson University.  In 2003, a subcommittee prepared and distributed a survey of questions dealing with budget, statistics, staffing, and holdings.  The survey results were presented to the VALE Executive Committee.  Also in 2003, a Research Subcommittee was formed.  On April 7, 2004, some members of the committee participated in one of the Rutgers University MLIS Colloquiums.  The topic was “Taming the Electronic Wilderness: New Challenges for Access Providers”.  More than 60 students attended.

In June 2004, Juan Almodóvar, New Jersey City University, was elected as the chair of the Committee. Many tasks were accomplished during the tenure of Almodóvar. In response to Electronic Resources Committee’s request, the BCMC compiled a list of records of electronic resources for VALE institutions to use so that VALE library holdings of electronic resources can be collocated. Establishing a NACO NJ funnel was brought up in March 2006. Members agreed to proceed with the initiative. Almodóvar also established the practice of member libraries’ round robin reports of recent library news and developments.

In October 2006, Cathy Weng, Head of Cataloging, the College of New Jersey, was elected as chair.  In March 2007, under the coordination of Ruth Bogan, Georgian Court University and Rhonda Marker, Rutgers University, NACO NJ Program was formally established with fourteen participating institutions. Two personal names and two corporate names training sessions were held in June 2007.  The Program participating institutions began to contribute name authority records to the NACO database in July 2007. In fall 2007, the BCMC developed a committee wiki. The wiki was established for two purposes: more efficient communication and cataloging resource sharing.
